QLD:Cougar ordered to pack up at Kingaroy

Campaigners against a south east Queensland underground coal gasification project are
celebrating a court's decision to have it pack up and leave town.

The Planning and Environment Court has ruled Cougar Energy should recommence decommissioning
its Kingaroy pilot scheme, dismissing the company's application for a stay on a government
shut-down order.

Three Queensland bureaucrats are being sued for shutting down the 550 million dollar
project in January, after a cancer-causing chemical was found in a monitoring bore on
the site.

Cougar is appealing the decision and wants the temporary stay in order to keep operating,
pending the appeal.

But the environment court's Judge RICHARD JONES didn't agree.

Kingaroy Concerned Residents Group secretary JOHN DALTON says the ruling confirms the
project was poorly executed and posed a serious threat to local underground water supplies.
