NSW: Bushfire contained, hot and windy forecasts tomorrow
A bushfire which threatened the NSW south coast peninsula of Jervis Bay has been contained.
Backburning and easing winds have helped firefighters control the blaze, which came
as close as one kilometre from the township of Hyams Beach.
Rural Fire Service spokesman CAMERON WADE says the fire is still burning in isolated
swampland south of Hyams Beach, but it's been contained and no longer threatens any properties.
Mr WADE says 120 firefighters are still working in the area, and hot and windy conditions
are forecast for tomorrow and Boxing day.
The bushfire forced the closure of Booderee National Park, which will remained shut
until January the 10th.
The fire caused extensive damage to about one third of the park, with some campsites
destroyed at Green Patch - one of Jervis Bay's most popular camping grounds.
The main road into the area, Jervis Bay Road, remains closed.
Around 150 people evacuated from nearby homes to HMAS Creswell naval base at Jervis
Bay, began heading home late yesterday.
