Fed: AFP calls for extra resources for expanded role
The Australian Federal Police has called for additional resources to fund its expandedrole proposed by federal and state leaders.
As part of their agreement on terrorism and transnational crime, the leaders have decidedthe AFP will also have the power to investigate state and territory offences with linksto federal matters under investigation.
AFP chief commissioner MICK KELTY says the force is currently discussing extra fundingwith government.
Mr KELTY's told ABC radio the role of the AFP had already expanded considerablyprior to these new changes.
He says the service used to have about four people under full-time close personal protectionbut that figure has now reached up to 20.
Mr KELTY says the AFP has also been doing a substantial amount of work for the UnitedStates's FBI.
